Chapter 8

Joe, Zac, Mom and I sat around the kitchen table munching on chocolate cake and gulping down milk. Everything tasted so good now that I was my regular size again. I figured that I probably smelled terrible after the day I’d had, but I really didn’t care. At least not for now. More importantly, I didn’t think Zac cared. Who would have thought accidentally shrinking myself would have gotten me closer to the cutest boy in school? Sure, I wasn’t a rich and famous star of a web series, but this was still a pretty good result.

“That was so awesome and cool!” Zac said. He patted himself down. “Just think, an hour ago I was inside a frog.”

“A toad,” I corrected.

“Yes, a toad,” Zac said. “Sorry, science isn’t my best subject. Whatever, it was kind of cool.” Zac sniffed himself. “Yikes, I must smell like a toad…”

“Actually, toads don’t smell bad,” Joe said.

We all looked at him.

“Hey, I know a lot of stuff,” Joe said defensively.

We all laughed. We were laughing with Joe, not at him. Zac put his arms around us. “You know, you two are pretty amazing!”

My heart skipped a beat. Zac said I was amazing! Not just amazing, but pretty amazing, and everybody knows pretty amazing is even better than amazing...when said by the coolest boy in school. Yep, my life was going to be different now. I wouldn’t be just plain Bella. I would be Bella - pal and friend to Zac. And who knows where that could go. Life was good! I was big again. Thanks to my curiosity, Mom’s latest crazy invention now works. And Mom might have a way to help feed the world. Plus Zac even learned the difference between a toad and a frog. At least, I’m pretty sure he has a decent idea that they aren’t the same animal. As an added bonus, my annoying little sister Becky and I grew a little closer. Not much mind you, she’s still an annoying little sister. But I found if she and I cooperate we can get stuff done. Yes, maybe someday Becky and I could even be friends? Wow, life was good!

A buzzing sound shook the kitchen.

“What was that?” Zac asked.

“Sounded like a fly,” Joe said.

“It can’t be. I’ve never heard a fly like that!” Zac said.

“You’ve never been in this house before,” Joe replied. “When you’re here, anything is possible and probably probable.”

Mom looked around. “Where are Becky and Bobby?”

“They said they were going to play one of Becky’s games,” Joe told us.

We noticed a trail of cake crumbs heading down into the basement. The basement was also where the buzzing sound was rumbling from. Nope, this wasn’t a coincidence.

My heart raced. “Oh, this could be bad!” I sputtered.

“Ah, how so?” Zac asked.

Mom stood up and headed towards the basement. “Let’s not speculate on what could be. Let’s get down there and see for ourselves. Scientists need to observe. That’s how we learn.”

We followed Mom down the stairs. The buzzing grew louder and louder with each step.
